But what are the perfect surf spots in Lombok for your surf level? After almost non-stop surfing for 4 months around Kuta Lombok, we give you our tips for unforgettable surf sessions.

Surf Spots for Beginners in Lombok

Are you starting to surf or have you stood on a surfboard only a few times? No worries, Lombok offers several surf breaks perfect for beginners.

Beste surfspots Lombok

Selong Belanak, paradise for your first time surfing in Lombok
The expansive bay of Selong Belanak is the place for anyone who has never surfed before. The waves here are small, there is no current, and the bottom is just sand.

Book a surf lesson right on the beach and learn the basics of surfing. Here, you’ll mainly work on your skills in the white water (the water when the wave has already broken).

This includes practicing your pop-up, take-off, and balance.

If, after a few sessions at Selong Belanak, you crave a bit more challenge, it’s time to hop on a scooter and ride to the beautiful Tanjung Aan beach.

Tanjung Aan, one of the best surf spots for beginners to intermediate surfers

Once you have the absolute basics down, dive into the water at Tanjung Aan. Again, this surf spot is a beauty to behold. Beautiful clear seawater, views of the hills of Kuta, and if you’re lucky, you can even admire the Rinjani volcano from your surfboard.

This surf spot is located in open water and is a short boat ride from the coast. This boat, also known as a surf taxi, can be easily arranged on Tanjung Aan beach itself. It will cost you about 3 euros per person. The boat takes you to the lineup (the place where the wave begins to break and where all surfers gather) and back when you’ve had your fill.

At Tanjung-Aan, you surf on a so-called reef break. The waves break above the reef. The waves here have much more power than, for example, Selong Belanak, making it the perfect surf spot to catch your first “green waves” (when you catch the wave before it breaks).

The most fun thing about surfing at Tanjung-Aan is that the waves are incredibly long. If you’re lucky, you’ll stand on your surfboard for 45 seconds to 1 minute. Ideal for working on your surf moves.

An absolute Foedsie surf spot favorite!

TIP! Book your surf lesson with Agus from Surfschool Kolega. A very pleasant and kind surf instructor.

Gerupuk, one of the most diverse surf spots in Lombok

Although the bay of Gerupuk is often mentioned as one surf spot, there are multiple spots to surf in the same bay. In total, there are four different breaks to find, and each break is completely different. When you want to surf at Gerupuk, it’s handy if you’ve surfed a few times before.

Gerupuk Inside Right

After Tanjung-Aan, Gerupuk Inside Right is the next favorite of team Foedsie. The waves here are very consistent.

The waves here are often a bit higher and have more power than Tanjung-Aan, making it a very good surf spot to take your skills to the next level. If you’re surfing here for the first time, we would recommend booking a lesson. The local surfers know better than anyone where to position yourself and what to watch out for at this surf spot.

Gerupuk Outside Right

This surf spot is just a bit further than inside right and is more suitable for surfers with more experience. The break consists of two parts, one part further out in the bay that can become very powerful. The other part of this surf spot consists of fast, long, and steep waves.

In short, this surf spot combines the power of the waves further out in the bay with the speed and steepness of the second part, making it a versatile and challenging destination for surfers looking for a diverse surf spot in one location.

This surf spot is the furthest away from the bay and is only suitable for advanced surfers. Expect steep and fast take-offs that end in a barrel on a shallow and sharp reef.

Don Don, a delightful A-frame wave

This surf spot is in the middle of the bay of Gerupuk. Expect very long mellow waves. One of the best surf spots in Lombok in our opinion. On good days, you can expect leg burn, that’s how long you can surf on these waves.

Are Guling, a left and right-hander in the same surf spot

Just west of Kuta is Are Guling. About 15 minutes away, you’ll find both a left-handed wave and a right-handed wave at this surf spot.

On bigger days, even quite long barrels can form here. A spot suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. If you’re not at that level yet, just relax on a beanbag with a Bintang in hand and watch the surfers.
