Nijmegen restaurants
The Netherlands is packed with cool cities, but Nijmegen secretly remains my favorite. As a student I enjoyed living here in the middle of the city and now I live just outside Nijmegen. It is the city of Maas and Waal, Frank Boeijen, the Four-Day Walk, a city full of history and Nijmegen was named the cheapest terrace city in the Netherlands several times (which should really be enough for a visit). In recent years, it has become hotspot heaven. The nicest eateries and hotels are sprouting up, not only in the center, but also in Nijmegen East and on the waterfront. So for me more than enough reason to collect all Nijmegen hotspots for you.

My day begins only after a good cup of coffee. In recent years, coffee shops in Nijmegen have sprung up like mushrooms. On every street corner, you can find fun hotspots to score a coffee, pastry or sumptuous lunch. If we are good at anything it is lunch, so the list of our favorite coffee shops in Nijmegen is now quite extensive. Nijmegen’s best bars and drinks spots
Besides lunch, there is something else we can do very well, maybe even better, and that is drinks. Ending the a long working day on the terrace or in the pub with a cold special beer, isn’t it heavenly! Fortunately, you won’t be short of bars in Nijmegen either. Fancy a drink in Nijmegen. These are the nicest places to plop down.
- Café in the Blaauwe Hand: oldest café in the Netherlands
- The backyard:The urban oasis of Nijmegen.

- Café Faber: cozy brown cafe, a favorite of Foedsie
- Lebowski: a cozy wine bar for the tastiest wines cozy wine bar
- PAAK Vinyl Bar: the place for cozy drinks
Bistrobar Berlin
In beautiful Nijmegen East you will find the super hip Bistrobar Berlin. In 2016, this restaurant opened its doors with none other than Ron Blaauw as house consultant. The restaurant is an instant success and is still packed to the brim every night.
It may be my new favorite. Not only the food, but also the atmosphere, the people and the presentation. A taste explosion from start to finish. The dishes are not only incredibly delicious, but also after dinner conversation material of the evening. You can talk about it for hours. How special a dish is or just the simplicity of the dish. I, too, will be a Berliner from now on. Perhaps my favorite Nijmegen hot spot. Read more about Bistrobar Berlin >>

Restaurant Bankoh
Berlin has a big brother there, namely restaurant Bankoh. The taste of Asia as you have never tasted it before. Foedsie favorite Berlin combined with Asia: we are in love. Don’t expect a simple noodle soup at Bankoh; the dishes here are sophisticated. It is Asia with a very fine twist. Of course, as an Indo, I am appalled to see that rice table and rendang are also on the menu, and how about a vegetarian lemper. Love it! Bankoh is located at the most beautiful place in Nijmegen, the commercial quay with a view that says you.
Tip. You may have to sit at the bar even if you have reservations. Personally, I find this a bit unsociable, besides you miss the beautiful view by doing this. So please indicate this when making your reservation.
Tip:
- Spring roll Bebek
- Lemper with jackfruit
- Smoked salmon with soy merengue and samphire
- Lemon Chicken

The backyard
Yessssss! Nijmegen has its own Stadsoase and immediately a very fine one. The perfect place for drinks and snacks. The city oasis is open Friday through Sunday. Events also take place regularly (when Corona allows it, of course). It is one big hip intention with a very nice atmosphere. Definitely one of the nicest hotspots in Nijmegen right now. In addition to specialty beers, wines and even cocktails, you can also go there for tasty simple snacks. We love it. You’ll find the backyard just outside downtown at Vasim.
Cali
Definitely a favorite! Cali is small, but oh so nice! You will find this drinks spot in the beautiful lower town of Nijmegen. The menu consists of great dinner-worthy drinks boards, vega or vegan. This really is the place for cozy drinks with good food. The atmosphere, food, the place everything is just right!
MIA
If you are also such a mega fan of ASIAN street food, then MIA is the place to be in Nijmegen. From fresh spring rolls, dumplings to full ASIAN high teas. You’ll find MIA near the train station and looks really super nice. The fresh ice teas are also atrociously good. While it may not sit in the most cozy spot in Nijmegen, this is truly a prime location. For example, we sometimes meet here with friends who come by train and we don’t have that much time. Plus it’s the perfect place to start or end your hotspot tour in Nijmegen. So you can get back on the train rolling. Inside, by the way, you don’t notice anything about the location; it looks super atmospheric. Also nice is the mini asian supermarket found here. Immediate flashbacks to the seven eleven in Asia.
Cafe Samson
Café Samson is truly a household name in Nijmegen. Consequently, every night is KEY busy here. The café describes itself as a café as a café should be. And we couldn’t agree more. Especially for beer lovers, this really is a must-visit hotspot in Nijmegen. Also nice, you always get a bowl of peanuts with it and you get to throw the shells on the ground. Good for the wood floor.

Café Faber
If you are from Nijmegen or come here more often, then you definitely know this café. Café Faber should not be missing from this list. We regularly end up here for a special beer or a drinks board. This old, beautiful brown cafe on Faber Square has remained so deliciously ordinary. No hip stuff, just good beer and conviviality. That is the strength of Faber. From the fabertjes newspaper, you can choose from dozens of beers that the staff knows a lot about. As nice as the newspaper is, the best thing you can do is let the staff surprise you. What!!! A hot spot at Foedsie on the list with no food. Of course not. At Faber, they serve super delicious pub food. Also inexpensive, for example, you can eat a pizza here on Sunday for only €6.50.

Kushiin
Fancy a good cup of coffee, pie, salad or tasty sandwich then Kushiin is always the place to be. This place can be found just outside the center on ziekerstraat.
Wally
The burger joint of Nijmegen remains Wally! And definitely should not be missing from the list Nijmegen hotspots. It was the first really hip burger joint in Nijmegen and for me love at first sight. And with great success, because chances are these days you’ll have to stand in line for a while to get your hands on one of those fantastic burgers from Wally’s. At Wally, they love burgers and you can taste, see and hear it. Because they really know how to tell you everything you need to know about the perfect burger here. For example, they use only local, sustainable products. When we’re in town, and we’re in a civilian mood (which is very often) the choice is always easy. (The Wally sauce is divine, by the way, and the homemade iced tea is also a winner!)
Wally Vegetable Pop-Up (closed)
Since last year I no longer eat meat and even then I can’t resist a visit to Wally. Totally fun, is that these days they also have a vegetable pop-up Wally with veggie junk food. How cool. Sausage gives way to carrot.

Cafe in the Blaauwe Hand
The oldest café in Nijmegen since 1542! Yes do that. This historic café is truly a gem and a favorite of many Nijmegen residents. The café can be found in the middle of downtown, yet still a bit hidden away. As beautiful as the café is, it is not really big. Getting a seat then can sometimes be a bit difficult. But that is precisely what makes In the Blue Hand so special and fun. The pub has an extensive beer menu and yep…you can even eat there.
Credible
Credible is one of those places where you just walk in quickly and then sit there all day. In fact, there is a super nice, warm homely atmosphere here. You can visit throughout the day for snacks, drinks or even to stay overnight. The closets are full of reading material, records and games. So you actually never have to leave.
I am also a big fan of Credible’s interior design. It’s vintage, but nice and loose. Not too styled. Everywhere you find little cute details and every time I discover something new. It is the place to catch up with friends, go for cocktails, for breakfast, to work but also to dine extensively.

Bistro Flores
Dishes without fuss. Quality and simplicity is what Bistro Flores stands for. All dishes are inspired by the seasons and local produce. Not only is the food at Bistro Flores good, but it is also a very nice, cozy place. The perfect place to really escape the crowds and dine elaborately.
Nibbles
If you often have choice stress or just enjoy trying different dishes, visit Nibbles. Here you can enjoy all kinds of delicious small international dishes/tapas. We chose the Nibbles Exclusive Menu and it was truly delicious. A table full of lots of goodies to share socially. The Thai crab cakes, risotto croquettes and pork belly satay are absolute musts. At Nibbles, you’re seated snug and cozy. Also a nice place for when you want to eat somewhere in Nijmegen with a group. During the day you can go there for the most delicious dishes.
Fresca
Fresca’s sunny terrace is always a good place to be. For the most delicious breakfasts, this is the place to be, from fresh yogurt with homemade granola, oatmeals or a nice egg. Even sleepers can always score breakfast here. At Fresca, they serve breakfasts all day long. All dishes at Fresca zjin made with a lot of love and as much local food as possible and you can taste it immediately. Even when the sun is not shining you can sit here cozy and snug. , because not only the food is mouth-watering, but the vintage décor is as well. Fresh cakes, All day breakfast, delicious sandwiches, well-filled salads and great coffees, I love it.

Fika
Making choices with food is soooo hard for me. Often there are so many goodies on the menu that I don’t want to choose. Then Fika is ideal. Fika is a Scandinavian-inspired lunch and drinks café in the center of Nijmegen. Here they serve smörrebröd, among other things. Delicious little sandwiches. The idea is to order 2 or 3. YES! I love that. If you prefer something sweet, Fika is also right for you. The lunchroom looks hipper the hip and the sandwiches are fantastic. It doesn’t get any more Scandinavian than this. An absolute Nijmegen hot spot. A visit to Fika is definitely worthwhile.
Lebowski
Yaaa…. Nijmegen has a very fine wine bar. And not just any one, but truly a topper of a hot spot! The interior of the hip wine bar is industrial, cozy and chic at the same time. There is a casual, cozy atmosphere and they serve the most delicious wines. Actually, I have already said too much; You had me at WINE. So do it!
Heaven
A Heavenly experience! Home-brewed beers and home-roasted coffee. At Heaven, it’s all about craft. De Hemel is located right in the center of Nijmegen in a beautiful old monastery. Especially in spring, we love coming here. Then the blossom is in beautiful bloom and it is truly a picture to visit. Also, the high tea is truly Heavenly!
Bairro Alto
Also a fine place for a nice breakfast or lunch. Tucked away behind the main market in a beautiful building (small but nice), Bairro Alto is a wonderful place to escape the crowds. At Bairro Alto, you can also order all sandwiches as salads. Super fun. Also, don’t forget to try the homemade cakes.
