Monte Sibilla
I had to go to the mountains on this road trip no matter what! Last year, we made a small detour through South Tyrol and visited Seceda, one of our favorite places during our previous road trip through Europe. The unique landscapes of La Marche
Monte Sibilla is one of the highest mountains in the Le Marche region and is located in the southeastern corner of the Sibillini Mountains National Park. The park covers an area of 70,000 hectares and is situated in the Apennines. The park may not be enormous, but its pristine nature and stunning landscapes make it a beautiful destination.
Hike to the top of Monte Sibilla
Okay, let me start by saying that we didn’t do this ourselves. The weather wasn’t in our favor, our camper was causing some issues, and carrying our old pug in a backpack didn’t make for the most ideal hiking conditions. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Many people decide to visit this region to climb to the top of Monte Sibilla, which stands at 2,173 meters. The summit can be reached in just a few hours of walking/climbing.
If you want to do this trek, it’s best to start at Regugio Sibilla, a mountain hut located at an altitude of 1,540 meters. This place is easily accessible by road from the village of Montemonaco. From this point, it’s relatively straightforward (still quite challenging) to hike to the top.
Multiple hiking areas
If you prefer to start with a slightly less challenging hike, there are plenty of options to choose from. Throughout the park, you’ll find easy and challenging hiking trails. The most popular starting points are Montemonaco, Rubbiano, and Montefortino. We stayed at Camping Sibilla in the village of Montefortino. From here, we decided to take a hike in the park towards Gola dell’Infernaccio. Unfortunately, we never made it there. The camper was struggling along the way, and we had to park on a steep slope at a rounded turn. Halfway through the hike, we decided to turn back and check if the camper was still there ;p
But it was a lovely mini hike, and the area is truly beautiful. If you’re a nature lover, you can easily spend days here and still discover new places.
Camping Monte Sibilla
We stayed at Camping Monte Sibilla for a few nights. This campsite is located near Montefortino and is the perfect base for your hikes. It’s convenient to have a car with you so that you can easily reach the starting points. The campsite itself is simple but tidy, nothing too special. However, you’ll have a fantastic view of the mountains of the Sibillini Mountains National Park.
