Gubbio: a charming medieval town
Umbria is bursting with cute little towns, and Gubbio is certainly no exception. You will find this city in the north of Umbria not far from Le Marche. The town is still relatively undiscovered and, as a result, is not yet overrun by tourists. This makes Gubbio extra special. Moreover, it is a tartufo (truffle) WALHALLA! So foodies put the Italian town of Gubbio on your bucket list very soon.
You can see medieval influences all over the city. This is because Gubbio was part of a Roman colony. The town is found on the slope of Monte Ingino. Stroll through the narrow steep streets or plop down at one of the many cozy terraces for a delicious meal with truffles, of course.

What to do in Gubbio
#1 Festival Gubbio
Most people know the town of Gubbio for its annual event Festa dei Cei. This event is held every year on May 15 and takes place to celebrate St Ubaldo, St George and St Anthony. There are three teams, each representing a saint. On this day, they carry a large monument on the shoulder and race it through the streets of Gubbio.
#2 Find a cozy restaurant and sample local truffles
That our greatest hobby is patio picking is no longer a secret to most people. The reason why we also incredibly enjoyed the charming towns in Umbria. Gubbio is also bursting with top restaurants, all with something Truffle on the menu. If you are also a truffle fan then we definitely recommend you try it here along with a casa del vino of course. Tip! If the menu is full of bottles of wine, ask for the vino della casa. Every restaurant has a house wine and they often taste great and are dirt cheap.For half a liter you pay about 3 – 5 euros! Yes you read that correctly indeed!
#3 Fountain del Bargello
Fountain of madness, that’s how Fountain del Bargello is also called. After all, if you run around the fountain here 3 times you get a diploma for crazy. Of course, only in the presence of a resident of Gubbio. If you have completed the diploma, then you belong to the Club of Madmen of Gubbio.
#4 Piazza Grande
Piazza Grande is the central point of Gubbio where, among other things, you can enjoy great views of the Umbrian hills. Here you will also find the town hall the Palazzo del Podestà and Palazzo del Podesta.
#5 Rummage sale
Every third Tuesday of the month there is a flea market in Gubbio. For vintage lovers, really enjoy strolling through this.

Best time to travel to Gubbio
The best travel time to visit Umbria and therefore Gubbio is from April to June and September, October. Even in July and August you almost always have nice weather in Umbria but the heat can be quite intense then. Also because it can be quite a climb at times. If you do go during the high season, it is wise to cool off often and bring some water with you.
Which budget do i need in Gubbio?
Gubbio does not have to be very expensive. Especially if you are with an RV, you have cheap camping options or even free wild camping spots in several places (especially in the off-season). You should consider the following budget at Gubbio:
- Lunch dish: 5 – 10 – euro p.p.
- Dinner: 15 – 20 euros p.p.
- Accommodations: 50 – 150 euros per night
- Camping: 20 – 30 euros per night
- Wine: 5 euros for half a liter
- Public transportation: 1 – 2 euros for small rides
- Sightseeing: especially churches and viewpoints are free of charge
Day budget Gubbio +camping: 45 – 75 euros per day for 2 people
Day budget Gubbio hotel: 75 – 150 euros per day for 2 people
Practical information about Gubbio
- Parking is often paid, so make sure you have plenty of cash and/or a credit card
- Many supermarkets and restaurants close in the afternoon.
- Want a cheap wine (always good in Italy). Then ask after the house wine. You often get these by the half or whole liter for about 5 – 10 euros.
- Learn a few words of Italian, such as thank you, have a nice day and may I order something etc.
- Bring water with you in hot weather, as it is quite a climb.

- The same obligations apply in the car as in the Netherlands. So bring safety jacket and warning triangle!
What are nice places to stay in Gubbio?
We stayed just outside Gubbio at a smallagriturismo for 20 euros a night. Not very cheap, but there was a pool, toilet, electricity and a view you could say U to. In addition, agritourisms are always a nice way to support small, local businesses. We therefore like to alternate wild camping with a visit to nice small campground or agriturismo.

How to get to Gubbio?
From the Netherlands, it is about a 1500 km drive to Assisi and takes almost 15 hours. So a hefty drive, but fine for a road trip. Along the way, you can make a few stops in South Tyrol or Switzerland, for example. If you have the time then we definitely recommend taking this road trip.
If you do want to fly then we recommend flying to Florence (2 hours), Bologna (3 hours) or Rome (2.5 hours) and from here rent a car to take a nice road trip through Umbria.
